VW T5 DoubleBack: A Home on the Road

Volkswagen T5 DoubleBack is probably the most innovative version of the world-wide famous VW Transporter. The name suggests two things: it’s part of the fifth generation and has a sliding insulated pod in the back.
The elevated roof is yet another element that sets the T5 DoubleBack apart. Most people, however, will be interested in the sliding back of this minivan. The video at the end of this post mentions that the car is made from aircraft industry materials. I’m not sure whether aluminum composite materials are considered aircraft industry materials, but I know that the sliding pod is made of it. Aluminum was VW’s material of choice here because of two reasons. First of all, it is very durable and secondly, it is very light. These two attributes make aluminum so popular all over the world in various industries.

Upon opening the tailgate, people may notice that the interior does not seem out of the ordinary. Pressing a button that’s accessible after opening the sliding door makes the magic happen. The aluminum sliding pod weighing 130 kg starts sliding out, thus doubling the volume of the interior. Two corner steadies come out of the bottom of the pod to support the weight and level the rear end. The pod itself is able to hold up to 300 kg, but when the corner steadies are in place, the maximum allowed weight is double of that.

The interior can easily accommodate 4 persons, but only 2 fit in front while driving. It is possible, though, to order a double passenger’s seat, thus increasing the capacity of the minivan to 3 while on the road. The tailgate is operational even when the pod is extended. The platform from the back is used as bed for 2 people, while the drop-down bed from the roof offers room for another couple. The layout is extremely well conceived. There is a 3 person bench seat on the left and a single person seat on the right, and all of them can be flipped up, to save space for dancing, I suppose. A lounge table which is stored under the drop-down bed fits between the seats without any problems. The fridge and the sink are the basic necessities of anyone who’s on the road for a rather long time.
Volkswagen’s T5 DoubleBack is not the only drawer-like minivan that I have seen online, but the other one (Nissan NV200) was not mass-produced in the same form as the concept. Speaking of mass-production, the T5 DoubleBack is already available for purchasing, but I’m not sure that many people will find the price of over 55,000 GBP (approximately $86,000) very accessible. In case the potential buyers are concerned whether this is the face-lifted version, the answer is yes, since it is built after 2009 when the T5 was modified.

Family That Stripped Naked in Front of High School Gets Sentenced

Sara Butler, 44, of Germantown, Pa., became a smart phone sensation on March 16, 2012, when she parked the car containing her mother, two adult daughters, Joanne, 23, and Bessie, 22, and an unnamed minor son, 14, in front of Upper Darby High School and tried to get her biological son dismissed from class. The school denied her access to the young man, saying that they did not have her name on record. She reportedly tried this several times, and then decided that the only thing to do, apparently, was to get the whole family out of the car, chant “Jesus is Lord” and pray for her son — completely naked in front of the school full of children. The performance didn’t last long, about ten minutes. Security finally caught them, wrestled them to the ground and held them for police, but not before a few students recorded the whole episode on their smart phones. They are charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. Butler and her daughter Bessie were taken to a psych ward for observation.

Butler and her daughters were in court on October 1 to face the charges against them. In Butler’s defense, her attorney, Sharmil McKee, apologized for her client, and told a judge that the bizarre display was caused by problems with the medications Butler takes for lupus conflicting and causing a psychotic episode in which, “Miss Butler thought that basically the world was coming to an end, so she — caring for her family — decided to bring all of her children together.” McKee also told the judge the reason for their nudity, “In order to please the Lord, Miss Butler felt that she needed to exit the world in the same manner that Adam and Eve entered the world, and to do so she needed to be naked.”

According the McKee, the daughters followed their mother’s example, rather than to seek medical assistance for her, because they had no reason to doubt her, adding, “This is the type of behavior we want to encourage. We want our children to do what parents say.” Judge Gregory Mallon had a different take on the situation and addressed the daughters saying, “You can’t always follow when your mother’s having a breakdown like that. I would hope you could recognize your mother’s having a breakdown and I would have thought that maybe you would intercede and have her calm down a little bit rather than follow her lead.” All three pleaded guilty, and were each given a year of probation— and told to stay away from the school.

The low-lying Pacific nation of Kiribati is negotiating to buy land in Fiji so it can relocate islanders under threat from rising sea levels

In what could be the world's first climate-induced migration of modern times, Anote Tong, the Kiribati president, said he was in talks with Fiji's military government to buy up to 5,000 acres of freehold land on which his countrymen could be housed.

Some of Kiribati's 32 pancake-flat coral atolls, which straddle the equator over 1,350,000 square miles of ocean, are already disappearing beneath the waves.

Most of its 113,000 people are crammed on to Tarawa, the administrative centre, a chain of islets which curve in a horseshoe shape around a lagoon.

"This is the last resort, there's no way out of this one," Mr Tong said.
"Our people will have to move as the tides have reached our homes and villages."

Mr Tong said the plan would be to send a trickle of skilled workers first, so they could merge more easily with the Fijian population and make a positive contribution to that country's economy.
"We don't want 100,000 people from Kiribati coming to Fiji in one go," he told the state-run Fiji One television channel.

"They need to find employment, not as refugees but as immigrant people with skills to offer, people who have a place in the community, people who will not be seen as second-class citizens.
"What we need is the international community to come up with an urgent funding package to deal with that ambition, and the needs of countries like Kiribati."

The land Kiribati wants to buy is understood to be on Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island.
Mr Tong's proposal is the latest in an increasingly desperate search for solutions.  Last year he suggested the possibility of constructing man-made islands like oil rigs for people to live on.
His government has launched an Education for Migration programme, aimed at upskilling its population to make them more attractive as migrants.

Kiribati youngsters study for degrees at the University of the South Pacific, which is based in the Fijian capital of Suva and jointly owned by 12 Pacific island countries.  Dr Alumita Durulato, a lecturer in international affairs at the university, said: "They are already preparing quite well.
"They have educated their youth to be able to survive in the new lands that they want to go to.

"They are going to leave behind their culture, their way of life and lifestyle, which is a little bit different from ours in Fiji."

Tarawa lies 1,400 miles from Suva and some i-Kiribati, as the islanders are known, hold concerns about whether their culture would survive after the population moves, especially if those who leave first are mainly the young.

A member of the Commonwealth, Kiribati was known as the Gilbert islands until independence from Britain in 1979.

The islands were first named after Thomas Gilbert, a British naval captain who navigated the archipelago in 1788, Kiribati being the local pronunciation of "Gilbert".
The total land area is 313 square miles and none of the coral atolls rises more than a few feet above sea level.

Former Student Union (URSU) President Haanim Nur Admitted to Taking Money from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) while she was Chair of the Saskatchewan chapter

former student union (URSU) president Haanim Nur
REGINA — The amount may only total $700, but some at the University of Regina are wondering about the impact on student politics after former student union (URSU) president Haanim Nur admitted to taking money from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) while she was chair of the Saskatchewan chapter.

Nur tendered her resignation as URSU president after the misappropriation was investigated by the CFS and the URSU board was informed.
In an interview last week with U of R student newspaper The Carillon, Nur said she knew it was a “stupid thing to do.”
“It’s totally beneath me. I shouldn’t have done it,” she told the paper.
Nur was contacted multiple times by the Leader-Post seeking comment, but never made herself available for an interview.
Kent Peterson is the Saskatchewan representative on the national CFS board.

University of Regina
He said the possibility of a misappropriation of funds was first raised in February when the bank used by the CFS Saskatchewan chapter called him about a suspect $300 cheque made out to Nur.

Processes with the chapter have changed since the incident with Nur was discovered, but at the time each cheque drawn by the group had to go through a cheque request and be signed by two parties — Peterson and Nur.
The bank sent Peterson a copy of the cheque and, once he realized the signature wasn’t his, he froze the account.

“That happened so there were no more dollars in, no more dollars out,” he explained.

“I asked (Nur) if she could explain the cheque and the answer she gave me wasn’t satisfactory so I took the step I’d wanted to do which was close that bank account entirely and ... arranged for all (CFS dues) to go directly into the national account.”

At that point it was March and URSU elections were in full swing; Nur was on the ballot for president.

“Nothing was proved and I wanted to make sure I had all the facts first, because we still ... didn’t have everything analyzed,” Peterson said, explaining why the allegations weren’t brought to light during the campaign.

In the end, the CFS investigated, and Peterson said three cheques were discovered which didn’t bear his signature.

Nathan Sgrazzutti, who replaced Nur as URSU president
Nur told the Carillon that she had contacted CFS, who told her to continue in her role and just to “make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Adam Awad, CFS national chair, said he “would find it very difficult to believe anyone in this office would have” had that response.
Awad said he hoped “at the very least” Nur would return the funds, but left it up to URSU to make the call.

Nathan Sgrazzutti, who replaced Nur as URSU president following a byelection last week, said the incident “compromises (the) whole student union.”

“(Students) are unhappy, they’re surprised, they’re angry,” he said.
“This is something we do not tolerate.”
