World’s Highest-Paid Musician of 2012

Ain’t nuthin’ but a money thing.

Dr. Dre, known for hits like “Nuthin’ But a G Thang,” “I Need a Doctor,” “Still D.R.E.” and “California Love,” tops Forbes‘ new list of The World’s 25 Highest-Paid Musicians — largely due to the success of his Beatsbydre headphones line.

The rapper raked in $110 million in total before taxes between May 2011 and May 2012. Forbes’ Zack O’Malley Greenburg explains:

“He collected $100 million pretax when handset maker HTC paid $300 million for a 51% stake in the company last year, at the beginning of our scoring period; he and his partners later bought back half of what they sold.

The brands are so aligned, Dre and Beats, it’s just who he is,” says Kevin Liles, former president of Def Jam Recordings, who now manages acts ranging from Young Jeezy to Trey Songz. “If you look at the biggest earners, the guys have been doing it for 20 years … what’s happening now is people are really telling their truth.”

Dr. Dre also stole the show at Coachella in April when he performed with Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, and the Tupac hologram.

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters nabs the No. 2 spot on the list with $88 million, thanks to the success of his worldwide concert tour The Wall Live, where he performs all of the Pink Floyd album The Wall.

Elton John rocketed to third place, boasting $80 million. In addition to performing 100 concerts during the survey period, the performer’s animated film Gnomeo and Juliet grossed $200 million, the magazine reports.

U2 led the Forbes list in 2011, and now they are No. 4, all thanks to the roaring success of their “360″ tour, which earned “$736 million over three years,” making it the highest-grossing tour in history.

The British boy band Take That takes fifth place, grossing $61 million for eight dates at London’s Wembley Stadium, “the highest-grossing single-stadium stand recorded to that point,” according to Forbes.

Other musicians in the top 10 (in descending order): Jon Bon Jovi ($60 million), Britney Spears ($58 million), Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift tied for eighth place ($57 million each), and Justin Bieber and Toby Keith tied for tenth place ($55 million each). View the rest of the list here.

Cocktail that Glows like the Aurora Borealis

Here is one way to make your next party a smashing success. It’s called Aurora and is TCCs black light phosphorescent take on jungle-juice… it’s pink under regular light, but glows blue under black light.

I can see it now… Doctor, I’m peeing rainbows.

Originally conceived in 2006, it is a drink that is pink in natural light, but glows aqua-marine in black-light. Thus, it represents the two main colors of the aurora-borealis. So, without further ado here is the recipe. (Originally, the drink was made with just pink-lemonade, but was later modified to use Rose’s Mojito Passion).

WHAT YOU NEED:

2 liters Gin or Vodka

9 Liters Tonic Water
3-4 Bottles Roses Mojito Passion, OR 3-4 Canisters of Pink-Lemonade Concentrate
Ice

INSTRUCTIONS:

Mix all ingredients together shortly before the party begins.

Add ice as late as possible before drinking.

Instagram loses 25% of it's users after rule change (Video)

Instagram users outraged over new rules made good on their threat to dump the popular photo-sharing app.

The app, which Facebook acquired for $1 billion earlier this year, may have shed nearly a quarter of its daily active users in the wake of the debacle, according to figures from AppData.

“[We are] pretty sure the decline in Instagram users was due to the terms of service announcement” on Dec. 17, AppData told The Post.

Instagram, which peaked at 16.4 million active daily users the week it rolled out its policy change, had fallen to 12.4 million as of yesterday, according to the data.

Last week, Instagram changed its terms of service to pave the way for advertising.

The new language would have allowed the company to sell user photos for advertising and promotions “without any compensation to you.”

The move sparked threats of a mass exodus, with celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber expressing outrage.

Just about the time the hashtag #boycottinstagram popped up on Twitter, Kevin Systrom, the CEO and co-founder, chalked it up to a big misunderstanding and insisted the company had no intention of selling users’ photos. Instagram has reverted to its old policy.

The damage, however, was done. While Instagram hasn’t said whether any of its 100 million subscribers deleted their accounts, the AppData figures show a steep drop in daily active usage.

It’s quite a comedown for the 2-year-old service, which bragged that it had its busiest 24 hours to date over Thanksgiving. That’s when users shared some 10 million photos — mostly of food.

There was no such announcement about Christmas, and yesterday Instagram declined to comment or provide any data for that day.

According to AppData, Instagram counted 14.5 million active users on Thanksgiving. By Christmas, that number had fallen to 12.5 million.

Instagram is still the second-most popular app and its monthly active users were rising, according to AppData.

(AppData isn’t able to measure every user of a particular app such as Instagram, but its numbers reflect trends in usage.)

Still, any hiccup in growth and daily activity could be detrimental as Instagram’s competition with services such as Twitter heats up.

Bieber withdrew his threat to leave, but as of yesterday Kardashian, the most followed user, hadn’t posted a picture of herself since the privacy flap.

One Laptop Per Child now One Tablet Per Child in Ethiopia

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a philanthropic organization that focuses on learning technologies, distributing thousands of low-cost laptops to children in developing countries.  In most cases, children have been provided access to OLPC laptops within teachers within traditional school settings.  But what about children who live in remote areas, where there are no schools, teachers, or even access to electricity?  They now have the opportunity to learn, even without teachers, through a small experiment conceived by Nicholas Negroponte, of OLCP and other researchers.  In this experiement, each child was provided with a Motorola Xoom tablet.  No teachers were around, because the children lived in a remote village that had no teachers.

The following video provides a brief overview of what happened over the course of a few weeks and months after the children received the tablets:

"Nicholas Negroponte, founder, One Laptop Per Child, on his latest experiment with the democratization of education - can children teach themselves to read?"

In his presentation, Negroponte discusses the differences between knowing and understanding, and the importance for teachers (or learning applications) to understand the learner.  He goes on to discuss the OLPC research project Ethiopia where children living in remote villages with no teachers, no exposure to print, illiterate communities, and no access to technology, learned to use tablets without instruction or guidance.  The village was provided with a solar panel and one village member was taught how to use it to supply power for the tablets.

Each tablet provided to the children had over 100 applications.  Within four minutes, one child open the box, turned on the on-off button. Within 5 days, each child was using an average of 47 applications.  Within five months, a child hacked the Android tablet to turn on thecamera capability.  According to Negroponte, the children were each using different applications, but collaborated with one another.

Maryann Wolf, Director of  the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, has collaborated with with the "OTPC" project. Other collaborators include Cynthia Breazeal and team at the MIT Media Lab, and Sugata Mitra at Newcastle University, according to Chris Ball, lead software engineer at OLPC.

The tablets include software that tracks data from all of the interactions from the children.  What a goldmine for education and cognitive/developmental psychology researchers According to Negraponte, the data is free for analysis.   (I will update this post with additional information about how the data can be accessed as soon as I can find the link.)

Although the OTPC concept is a noble idea, it does not appear to address the fact the children and their families who live in remote villages do not have access to literacy support in their own language.

Embedded Touch-Screen Computer Games for Primates at the Zoo!

Interactive computer games still very common in our public schools, the day-time habitat for most young human primates. Non-human primates at several zoos now have access to "ubiquitous" touch-screen computer games, embedded within their habitats, as part of a research program spearheaded by Atlanta's Center for Behavioral Neuroscience.

The games were developed with assistance from IBM volunteers to help assess reasoning, learning, and memory.
