Politics came clad in lingerie Friday evening as Saskatoon strippers and burlesque performers joined to protest the provincial ban on mixing strippers and alcohol.
Dancer Vicky Valencourt walked into the entrance before showtime and called to one of her fellow performers.
“Can you help me with this,” she asked, gesturing to the strap of the leopard-print top barely covering her studded leather bra.
“Wardrobe malfunction. It’s not keeping it in.”
Over 15 people performed at the event at Cosmopolitan Seniors Centre, called Naked If I Want. Performers protested the SLGA ban as an antiquated relic of Saskatoon’s temperance history.
“I think our laws are very archaic,” said Valencourt, who strips and has her own company, Hell’s Bells Productions.
Those who support repealing the ban are not asking for anything radical, she says.
“We’re just trying to get on the same level as all the other provinces.”
Through there is no ban on stripping or strip clubs in the provbince, Valencourt says the current ban essentially makes it unprofitable for clubs to operate.
“It’s impossible for a club to be self-sustaining without alcohol sales.”
With clubs unable to operate under the current system stripping now mainly occurs at private functions, which Valencourt says can make for dangerous situations for the dancers.
“There’s a huge saftey issue there,” she said.
For Bella Kaje, owner of KJ’s Party Favors, it’s not about safety but about rights.
“We can’t drink and be naked if we want to? It’s my choice if I want to drink and watch strippers. If I can do it in public why not private?”
Kaje says her business finds ways around the law instead. Her company runs a private event centre where guests are welcome to bring their own alcohol to performances.
She is also about to open a club in the basement of the Patricia Hotel that she says will start pushing the boundaries of the law further, with women serving alcohol topless but wearing tassles over their nipples.
Event organizer Devin Ens says the more people can do to stoke the fire, the better. He’s happy to combine protest with performance.
“Having a show I find is a fun approach to protesting, and one of the benefits of a variety show is we’re creating solidarity between those who be affected,” whether strippers, burlesque, or drag performers, he said.
